Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you have to give up your favorite pastime! Too many people think of kayaking as just a summer sport or something to do on a long vacation, but the waters are just as inviting in the winter and there’s a lot less hassle since there are fewer people spoiling your fun.
Instead of a long vacation, just a weekend getaway is sometimes all it takes to get you to places where you can kayak. Whether you want a quiet vacation to explore some waterway slowly in seclusion or test your abilities against white water, some of our favorite trips have taken place when everyone else thought the water was too cold for kayaking.
With the right equipment, you can be comfortable and have the trip of a lifetime. While the rest of the world is planning their next trip or looking at pictures or videos of their last one, you can be out there cutting the water and making more memories.
So stash those winter clothes and blues and get back on the water! This is a perfect time to recharge yourself by taking the time to do something you like, and if you tell us about a perfect little spot you found, we promise not to tell a soul!

The coastal waters, vast lakes, rivers, bays, and parks make California a prime boating location. The waters are suitable for kayaks, canoes, paddling, and just about any water sport available. Finding the right place to kayak depends on what kind of kayak sport you plan to do and it can also depend on what level of experience you have. This is because water and weather conditions for each location vary and can always change unexpectedly.
Channel Islands: The National Park of Channel Islands is a great kayaking location. With a kayak, you are able to observe and experience its pristine aquatic environment. Here, you can kayak on your own or with a park authorized guide. Some of the guided trips don’t even require previous kayak experience, so beginners can take part, too. Each area of the channel islands has certain restrictions and some spots are better for more experienced kayakers.
Lake Tahoe: Located around between California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is a great spot for all sorts of boating activities, especially kayaking. The shoreline is 72 miles and is surrounded by beautiful mountains and views. The rest of the lake is over 180 square miles, ready for your kayak.
Castaic Lake: Located just north of Santa Clarita, Castaic Lake is run by LA County Dept of Parks and Recreation. It’s a fresh water lake that is perfect for kayaking and even just relaxing under the sun.
Dana Point Harbor: This harbor is great for kayaks, canoes, jet skis, and more. It’s surrounded by restaurants, bars, hotels, and fun. Stay for a day or book a weekend in one of the nice hotels. There is also shopping areas available for tourists and locals.

Finding the perfect kayak paddle is not as easy as it sounds. It shouldn’t be too difficult but it is still very important and may take some time. Many things can go into consideration when deciding on a paddle such as the type of paddling you are going to be doing, your height and body strength, and the size of your kayak.
Once these areas are determined, you can start to examine the differences in paddle characteristics including blade length and shape, shaft length and shape, and the materials used to construct the paddle.
The length and shape of the blade play a very important role in paddling. The blades can be long, short, narrow, wide, feathered, symmetrical, spooned, or dihedral. With every shape comes its own benefits and strengths. A wide blade with larger surface face can provide for more acceleration but will also result in more water resistence. More effort is needed to control a paddle with a wider blade than those with smaller or more narrow blades.
Feathered paddles have blades that turn in towards an angle. This allows for more efficient strokes with its narrow edge instead of being completely flat. Touring paddles are typically long, symmetrical, and narrow. Some kayakers find that asymmetrical paddles reduce the amount of twisting needed to paddle and can be done with softer strokes.
If you are very tall, well above 6 feet, a longer paddle is necessary for you to get the best control and maneuverability. A long paddle will create more resistence but allow for more power during each stroke.
A paddles weight, durability, and flexibility are determined by the materials used in making the paddle. Some paddles are made from fiberglass, plastic, aluminum, carbon, and even wood. Your own personal preference will determine which material is best for you.

Kayaks come in many styles suitable for different types of kayak activities. A kayak you would use in a lake or calm river may be different from a fishing kayak or surf kayak. This is because kayaks are designed for different purposes to give you the best kind of mobility and maneuverability for whatever type of kayak sport you are doing.
Sit-On-Top: These kayaks were derived from the surfboard design. There is a groove on the top of the kayak for you to sit on, instead of being entirely inside of the kayak. These styles are popular for fishing and SCUBA diving because of the ease of mobility and entering/exiting the vessel. You are more exposed to the elements when using this type of kayak and they tend to be slower than other models.
Sit-In: The sit-in design tend to be longer and narrower in order to go faster and have more ease with paddling. Because you are actually inside of the kayak, you are closer to the water. Sit-ins will have dry storage areas because of the “cock-pit” style within the kayak. This also keeps the kayaker generally dry and warm. This style of kayak is faster and easier to paddle than most of the sit-on-tops.
Fishing Kayaks: The designs of fishing kayaks are similar to recreational sit-in and sit-on-top kayaks, but have wider beams to increase balance and stability. Some models even have a new twinhull design which allows you to stand up inside of the kayak and still have balance and stability. Rod mounts and bait buckets make fishing from your kayak even easier, giving you more free arm room and space.
Inflatable Kayaks: These special kayaks are, like the name says, inflatable. They can be inflated by hand, foot, or electric pumps. They fit inside of carrying bags making their transportation very easy, without the need for trailers or car racks. New designs have taken the style of sit-on-tops by using multiple inflatable sections in order to make it worthy of the sea. They tend to be slower than traditional kayaks.
Surf Kayaks: A surf kayak is generally faster than recreational kayaks. Their construction is similar to whitewater kayaks and they are very popular in coastal areas. Some of these kayaks come equipped with fins, flat bottoms, and hard edges. This promotes the use of a surfing style wave as opposed to a river or moving water of a rapid.

Inflatable kayaks are an easier alternative to hard, stable kayaks. They are easier to transport since they usually come in their own carry bag. Often, they are made out of hypalon, pvc, or polyurethane coated cloth and can be inflated by hand, foot, or electric pumps. The air pressure required is usually low, below 3 psi.
In the past, inflatable kayaks needed to be used with more caution and in calmer waters and rivers. Recently, some kayak manufacturers have wanted to improve the inflatable kayak design and make them more durable and comparable with other types of kayaks. They combined the same design principles of the folding kayak, which uses an internal frame, with the designs of the sit-on-top kayak. These ideas allowed them to develop multiple inflatable sections instead of just one or two. This allowed for the production of a quality sea kayak.
They tend to be slower than traditional kayaks because of their build and may need more paddling. However, inflatable kayaks can be easy to master, are generally stable, and have a small turning radius. Their portability also makes it much easier to travel with and they can really come in handy on an impromptu kayak trip. They allow you to skip the car rack or trailer and just toss the carrying bag in the back.

Recently, sport fishing from your kayak has become more and more popular, especially in warmer regions of the US. Fishing kayaks are specially designed for you to be doing more action while in the kayak, instead of just paddling. Some are stable enough for you to stand while fishing and can easily carry your balance.
At Up Sports, we know that you need stability and comfort when choosing a fishing kayak. That is why many companies we carry specifically design their kayaks with a twinhull in order to make fishing and paddling easier and more stable. They also allow you to change positions much easier than before, and there is no need to sacrifice speed for stability.
Some of the fishing kayaks have designs similar to recreational kayak designs, such as the sit-in or sit-on-top kayaks. These are usually characterized by wide beams in order to increase the lateral stability. This has allowed kayak fishing to become a huge sport. Without the ease that the new fishing kayak designs have brought, this would not have been possible.
If you enjoy kayak fishing or wish to try it out, we carry several accessories for you and your kayak to make your fishing trip even better. We have special rods that can be hooked onto the kayak to hold your rod in place and free your hands for other tasks. We also carry bait buckets, mounts, and bait casters. Browse through our wide selection of fishing kayaks and fishing accessories and your trip will be unforgettable.
